Kéniéba (Mali) : Grève des bouchers, la viande introuvable pendant 48 heures
The town of Kéniéba has been experiencing an unusual situation since Thursday, February 5, 2026. Market stalls have remained empty following a 48-hour strike called by local butchers. The protest stems from an increase in the price per kilogram of meat with bones.
Gathered within their association, professionals in the sector are demanding an increase of 500 CFA francs on the price of a kilogram of meat with bones, which would thus go from 3,000 CFA francs to 3,500 CFA francs.
However, no changes have yet been proposed regarding boneless meat, which is sold at 4,000 CFA francs per kilogram.
According to Mamadou Cissokho, a butcher from Kéniéba contacted by Seneweb, this demand stems from the soaring price of livestock in the surrounding markets. He asserts that this increase is crippling their daily operations and significantly reducing their profit margins. "The cost of buying livestock has risen sharply, and we can no longer continue selling at a loss," he explained.
Faced with this situation, a meeting was organized between representatives of the butchers and local authorities to defuse the crisis. However, the discussions failed to produce a compromise. The authorities consider the price demanded to be unaffordable for households in Kéniéba, already struggling with a difficult economic climate.
While awaiting a favorable outcome to negotiations, this temporary strike is disrupting household supplies and changing the cooking habits of the population, who are forced to turn to other sources of protein.
The next few hours will be crucial in determining whether common ground can be found between the two parties.
