L'Afrique du Sud va déployer l'armée face au crime organisé
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday his intention to deploy the army alongside the police in order to combat the high level of organized crime in the country.
South Africa's high death rate, around 60 deaths per day, includes killings in gang clashes in some Cape Town neighborhoods and shootings linked to illegal mining in Gauteng province where Johannesburg is located.
"Organized crime is now the most immediate threat to our democracy, our society and our economic development," Mr. Ramaphosa said in his annual state of the nation address.
"I will deploy the South African National Defence Forces to support the police," he told both houses of Parliament.
The president specified that he had asked police and military officials to prepare a plan to determine where "our security forces should be deployed in the coming days in the Western Cape (the province of which Cape Town is the capital, editor's note) and Gauteng to deal with gang violence and illegal mining."
He also announced the recruitment of 5,500 police officers and the strengthening of intelligence with the main objective of identifying crime syndicates.
"The cost of crime is measured in lives lost and shattered destinies. It is also felt in the climate of fear that pervades our society and in the reluctance of businesses to invest," said Cyril Ramaphosa.
