L'Afrique du Sud va rouvrir l'enquête sur la mort de Steve Biko
South African prosecutors announced Wednesday that they will reopen the investigation into the death of black anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko, nearly 50 years after he died in a Pretoria cell.
Steve Biko, founder of the Black Consciousness Movement, died at the age of 30 in 1977, after being beaten into a coma by police who had arrested him a month earlier.
His disappearance sparked a wave of anger around the world and he became a symbol of the struggle against the segregationist system of apartheid in South Africa, which denied all political and economic rights to the country's black majority.
The investigation will be reopened on September 12, the anniversary of Steve Biko's death 48 years ago.
Its main objective is "to present evidence to the court that will enable it to determine whether the death was caused by an act or omission that (...) involves or amounts to an offence on the part of a person," the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.
The 1977 inquest had supported the police account that Steve Biko had injured himself by hitting his head against a wall and no one had been prosecuted for his death.
But in 1997, former police officers confessed to assaulting the activist during hearings conducted by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission into crimes committed during the apartheid era.
The Commission had refused to grant amnesty to the police officers, finding that they had lied in their testimony and had not proven the existence of a political motive for Steve Biko's murder.
His story inspired British singer Peter Gabriel's 1980 anti-apartheid song "Biko," and later Richard Attenborough's 1987 film "Cry Freedom."
