At odds with Mali, Algeria is attempting to maintain its influence in the Sahel via Niger. Abdelmadjid Tebboune's country generously donated a 40-megawatt power plant to Niamey. The official inauguration ceremony for the industrial facility took place yesterday, Wednesday, June 3rd, in Gorou Banda, in the presence of Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine and his Algerian counterpart, Sifi Ghrieb.

In his speech, Mr. Zeine welcomed the commissioning of this Algerian-Nigerian solidarity power plant.

An Algerian-Nigerien cooperation that "fits perfectly with Niger's priorities"

 

He says he is convinced that this infrastructure will strengthen the energy capabilities of his country, which is part of a dynamic of energy sovereignty.

The senior official also praised Algerian-Nigerien cooperation, which "fits perfectly with Niger's priorities as outlined by the President of the Republic, Head of State, General Abdourahmane Tiani."

"Our two countries have just demonstrated once again that good neighborliness is built on listening, mutual support and the ability to be there when the essentials demand it," he continued.

Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, for his part, indicated that the commissioning of the industrial facility marks the entry of "bilateral cooperation into a new phase characterized by speed, efficiency and the concrete implementation of political commitments".

The power plant is entirely financed by Algeria

He assured that Algeria under President Tebboune will remain "fully committed to supporting the Republic of Niger in its development efforts, particularly in the sectors of energy, hydrocarbons, infrastructure, health, training, higher education, digitization and transport.

It should be noted that the power plant was entirely financed by the Algerian state. Its cost has not been disclosed.
