Le Burkina affirme avoir refusé d’accueillir des personnes expulsées des États Unis

Burkina Faso affirmed on Thursday that it had refused to accept people deported from the United States, one of the flagship measures of US President Donald Trump since his return to the White House.

Deporting people to third countries – often where they have never lived – is one of the main pillars of the new Trump administration's anti-immigration policy.

In Africa, Eswatini, Ghana, Rwanda and South Sudan have accepted people deported by the United States in recent months.

On Thursday evening, the Burkinabe Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that his country had rejected this American proposal.

The question "was to see if Burkina Faso, apart from our own nationals, was ready to receive other people who would be expelled by the United States," Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré told national television.

"Naturally, this proposal, which we deemed indecent at the time, is totally contrary to the value of dignity, which is part of the very essence of the vision of Captain Ibrahim Traoré," the head of the military regime, he added.

These statements come a few hours after the announcement by the United States Embassy in Ouagadougou of the suspension of regular services for most categories of visas to persons residing in Burkina Faso.

The American embassy in Lomé has been designated to now receive Burkinabe visa applications.

According to Mr. Traoré, Burkina Faso "is part of a list of states whose nationals have not respected the instructions regarding visa use" according to an American verbal note.

"Is this a pressure measure? Is it blackmail? In any case...Burkina Faso is a land of dignity, a destination and not a land of deportation," Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré said.

Eswatini has agreed to accept up to 160 people deported from the United States in exchange for $5.1 million (€4.3 million) in financial aid "to strengthen its border and migration management capacities," according to an agreement seen by AFP.

In early September, Ghana welcomed eleven people from West Africa, before expelling at least six of them to Togo, making their situation even more complex and drawing criticism from human rights defenders.

Burkina Faso is ruled by a sovereignist military junta that came to power following a coup in September 2022.
