Ghana has agreed to accept a request from Washington to accept West African nationals deported from the United States, Ghanaian President John Mahama said Wednesday.
"We were asked by the United States to accept third-country nationals expelled from the United States. And we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable," Mr. Mahama told reporters.
According to him, 14 people have already arrived in Ghana under this policy, including "several" Nigerians, who have since returned to their countries of origin.
A regional agreement allows West African nationals to travel within the region without a visa.
Deporting people to third countries – often where they have never lived – is one of US President Donald Trump's flagship measures against illegal immigration, with hundreds of deportations already carried out to Panama, El Salvador and South Sudan.
The agreement between Ghana and the United States comes as Washington has increased tariffs on Ghanaian products and restricted the number of visas.
Mr. Mahama acknowledged on Wednesday that relations between Accra and Washington were "tense" and stressed that Ghana should seek to increase its exports to China.
Neighboring Nigeria has so far refused to enter into any agreement with Washington. Asked in June to accept Venezuelan nationals, its Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, denounced "considerable pressure on African countries."
In Ghana, protests have been taking place in recent months against the Nigerian community, accused of being responsible for an increase in crime and prostitution, and of causing unfair economic competition.
In late July, the Ghanaian government and Nigerian officials held talks in an attempt to ease tensions.
