Le Liberia appelle au "calme" après des tensions à la frontière avec la Guinée

The Liberian government on Thursday called on its population on the border with Guinea to "remain calm" and avoid escalation as tensions erupted in the region, leaving one person injured.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Liberia's Information Minister, Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, announced that "diplomatic efforts" were underway to resolve tensions at the border.

"The Government of Liberia reiterates its appeal to citizens, particularly those living in border communities, to remain calm and respect the law, and to cooperate with members of the security forces deployed in the Foya district (northern Liberia) in order to maintain peace and avoid escalation of the current situation," the minister added.

An official Liberian delegation will travel to Guinea within the next 24 hours to engage in dialogue with the authorities of that country, he indicated.

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of an incident involving an exchange of gunfire at the border on Wednesday. A Liberian citizen was injured in the incident, the minister added.

In late February, border tensions also erupted between Guinea and Sierra Leone, with the two countries accusing each other on Tuesday of military incursions into their territories along their common border.
