The King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, is suffering from back pain "without any signs of seriousness" but requiring rest, the official MAP news agency announced Saturday evening, citing his personal physician.
"His Majesty the King is suffering from mechanical lumbosciatica, associated with a muscle contracture, without any signs of severity," the agency said.
"These lower back pains require, according to the prescription of His Majesty the King's personal physician, appropriate medical treatment and a period of functional rest," she added.
During Emmanuel Macron's state visit to Morocco in October 2024, Mohammed VI, whose health has been the subject of media speculation, appeared leaning on a cane, due to "sciatica" according to local media.
At the end of the same year, he had undergone surgery in Rabat on his left shoulder after "a fracture of the humerus" caused by a fall "during a sporting activity", according to an official statement.
And in 2020, he underwent heart surgery in Rabat, following a first procedure in January 2018 in Paris.
Mohammed VI has reigned over Morocco since July 1999, when he succeeded his father Hassan II.
