Les 10 pays africains les plus prospères en 2026, selon le dernier classement

Prosperity is not just about money. While economic growth often makes headlines, a country's prosperity is increasingly measured by the quality of life, education and health of its population, as well as their access to the fruits of development.

According to the Atlantic Council's 2026 Prosperity Index, the most prosperous nations in Africa are those that have successfully combined economic opportunities, strong social outcomes, environmental sustainability and increased inclusion.

The index measures both individual well-being (through indicators such as income, education, and health) and shared prosperity (including environmental quality, income equality, and the well-being of minority groups). Countries are ranked according to the weighted average of six indicators and grouped into categories ranging from "High Prosperity" to "Low Prosperity."

This ranking highlights an important reality: the richest countries in the world are not always the most prosperous.

Globally, Europe dominates the rankings, representing 30 of the top 40 countries, with Norway, Iceland, Denmark and Sweden all in the world's top 5.

In Africa, however, a mix of island economies, resource-rich nations, and countries with relatively strong institutions has emerged as the engine of the continent's prosperity. Here are the 10 most prosperous African countries in 2026:

1) Seychelles (Rank 39, Score: 77.4)

The Seychelles ranks first among the most prosperous countries in Africa and 39th globally in the 2026 Prosperity Index. This island nation combines relatively high incomes with excellent performance in health, education, and the environment. Its economy, heavily reliant on tourism, contributes to maintaining a high standard of living. The Seychelles also benefits from political stability and a rigorous environmental protection policy, all factors that foster individual and collective prosperity.

2) Cape Verde (Rank 42, Score: 76.1)

Cape Verde ranks second in Africa and 42nd globally, demonstrating consistent progress in economic development and human capital. Despite limited natural resources, the country has built a resilient economy based on tourism, services, and remittances. Investments in education, health, and democratic governance have improved the quality of life.

3) Maurice (Rank 45, Score: 74.6)

Mauritius remains one of Africa's greatest economic success stories, ranking 45th globally. The country has undergone a radical transformation, evolving from a sugar-based economy into a diversified hub encompassing finance, tourism, manufacturing, and technology. Strong institutions, a high-quality healthcare system, and a high level of education contribute to its prosperity.

4) Ghana (Rank 46, Score: 73.2)

Ghana ranks 46th globally and is among the most prosperous countries in West Africa. Economic growth, driven by raw materials, services, and technology, has improved living standards over the years. Despite persistent challenges related to inequality and infrastructure, investments in education and health have contributed to strengthening Ghana's overall prosperity.

5) South Africa (Rank 50, Score: 72.6)

South Africa ranks 50th globally, thanks to its position as Africa's most industrialized economy and its concentration of wealth. The country performs relatively well in education, financial services, and infrastructure. However, high unemployment, inequality, and social challenges continue to weigh on its overall prosperity.

6) Botswana (Rank 55, Score: 72.0)

Botswana's ranking reflects decades of prudent economic management and political stability. Diamond revenues have funded investments in health, education, and infrastructure, contributing to one of the highest per capita income levels in Africa. While economic diversification remains a challenge, Botswana continues to be recognized as one of the best-governed and most prosperous countries on the continent.

7) Namibia (Rank 58, Score: 71.4)

Namibia is among the top-performing African countries. Its economy is based on mining, agriculture, and tourism, while investments in education and public services have improved human development. Although inequality remains a major concern, Namibia's commitment to the conservation and sustainable management of resources contributes positively to its prosperity score.

8) Senegal (Rank 63, Score: 69.5)

Senegal's situation reflects growing economic dynamism and improved social indicators. Significant investments in infrastructure, energy, and digital technologies have helped stimulate growth and attract investment. The country also benefits from political stability and expanded access to education and healthcare. Recent developments in the oil and gas sector could further strengthen the economic outlook, although ensuring equitable growth remains a major challenge.

9) Lesotho (Rank 72, Score: 67.5)

Lesotho's high prosperity ranking is due to progress made in health, education, and social development, despite significant economic constraints. The country's economy is closely linked to that of neighboring South Africa through trade and the labor market.

10) Gambia (Rank 74, Score: 67.2)

The Gambia completes the top 10 most prosperous African countries according to this ranking. The country has made significant progress in governance, social inclusion, and democratic reforms in recent years. Tourism, agriculture, and remittances remain important drivers of economic growth.
