On the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit, the institution launched Africa Water Vision 2063, a strategic framework aimed at ensuring sustainable access to water and sanitation, in line with Agenda 2063.
At the ceremony held on February 15, 2026, Moses Vilakati, Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (ARBE), recalled the urgency of taking action in the face of the approximately 400 million Africans without access to safe drinking water and the 700 million deprived of safe sanitation.
He stressed the need to close an investment gap estimated at between $45 billion and $54 billion and to assert strong political leadership to ensure health, food security, employment and resilience on the continent.
