Mali : reprise progressive des cours à Bamako et dans le reste du pays
Classes gradually resumed in Bamako and several other Malian cities on Monday, after a two-week interruption due to fuel supply difficulties caused by a blockade organized by jihadists, according to local sources contacted by AFP.
Since September, the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), affiliated with Al-Qaeda, has been organizing a blockade in Mali on fuel imported from neighboring countries, which is severely disrupting this landlocked Sahelian country.
The group is targeting fuel tanker trucks coming mainly from Senegal and Ivory Coast, through which the majority of imported goods transit.
This strategy of strangling the economy led the ruling junta in Mali two weeks ago to suspend classes in schools and universities and to impose restrictions on fuel supplies.
The Ministry of National Education announced on Friday the resumption of classes in schools and universities starting this Monday.
"Classes have resumed in Bamako. In our school group, all the students and teachers are present," a union official in the capital confirmed to AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the security situation.
Several fuel convoys have been able to reach the capital and some blockaded areas in the rest of the country in recent days, relieving pressure on the government and the population.
While classes have resumed in Bamako and several inland cities, teachers are missing in rural schools due to a lack of fuel to reach their posts.
In the town of Dioïla, 160 km east of Bamako, "classes have resumed only in the town," a teacher from the town told AFP.
"However, classes are not being held in the surrounding villages. There is still a fuel shortage," the teacher continued.
In Ségou, a city in the center of the country, "classes have resumed in several schools despite the difficulties," testifies a teacher who points out that electricity is only available there for a few hours a day.
Since 2012, Mali has been facing a serious security crisis fueled in particular by the violence of JNIM and the Islamic State in the Sahel.
The junta, in power since two coups in 2020 and 2021, is struggling to contain jihadist attacks on the ground.
