Mali: interdiction de circulation des motos hors des grandes villes
Motorcycles are the preferred means of transport for jihadist groups in Mali, which has been plunged into an unprecedented security crisis for several weeks, while jihadists impose a blockade on Bamako.
"The circulation of motorcycles with an engine capacity of 125 cm3 and above, outside of major urban areas, is suspended throughout the entire national territory," states an interministerial decree read on national television Wednesday evening.
According to the document, the "district of Bamako, the capitals of the Region, Circle and Arrondissement" are not affected by this decision.
In addition, the authorities announced in another statement the suspension of "the importation, transit, marketing, sale and free distribution of motorcycles with an engine capacity of 125cc and above, as well as their accessories (...) throughout the entire national territory".
Mali is facing a critical security situation after large-scale coordinated attacks carried out on April 25 and 26 by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), allied with Al-Qaeda, and the rebellion of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), predominantly Tuareg.
Since April 30, the jihadists have also imposed a road blockade on several routes leading to the capital Bamako.
