Mali: l'armateur MSC reprend ses livraisons après quelques jours de suspension

The Italian-Swiss shipping giant MSC has announced the resumption of its land deliveries to Mali, which were interrupted last week due to security problems and fuel shortages caused by a jihadist blockade, according to an official letter seen by AFP on Tuesday.

For several weeks, jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), affiliated with Al-Qaeda, have imposed a blockade on fuel imports as far as Bamako, paralyzing the economy of this landlocked Sahelian country dependent on imports.

On November 6, MSC announced it was suspending its land-based deliveries of goods to Mali "until further notice," due to "security concerns" and "fuel shortages."

On Monday, the group reversed this decision after reaching an agreement with the Malian government.

"Following our fruitful discussions, we are very pleased to inform you of the resumption of our activities, thus suspending the press release of November 6. We therefore confirm the resumption of our operations in Mali," announced the management of MSC Mali in a letter addressed to the Malian Minister of Transport.

Last week, the French company CMA-CGM, the world's third largest shipping company, also announced it was suspending its operations in Mali before reversing this decision after an agreement was reached with the authorities.

The JNIM jihadist blockade has forced the Malian state to close schools for two weeks. It is preventing agricultural harvests in several regions and severely disrupting access to electricity.

On Monday, classes gradually resumed in Bamako and several other Malian cities, according to local sources contacted by AFP.

The United States and the United Kingdom have announced the withdrawal of their non-essential personnel from Mali, and several foreign embassies, including France, have asked their nationals to leave the country.

The military, in power in Mali since two coups in 2020 and 2021, had promised to stem the jihadist expansion that has been shaking the country for more than a decade.
