A diplomatic meeting was held in Nouakchott between Mali and Mauritania, following accusations by the Malian army alleging the presence of terrorist groups in a refugee camp located in Mauritanian territory.
The Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, received the Malian ambassador, Bakary Doumbia, in order to ease tensions.
The controversy stems from a statement by the Malian army reporting the escape of two soldiers detained at the camp, before their recapture in Goundam, in the Timbuktu region. Bamako had then described the site as a "rear base for armed groups," accusations immediately rejected by Nouakchott.
Both countries are now prioritizing dialogue to defuse this new diplomatic tension.
