Mali: radiation d'un colonel ayant rapporté des exactions de l'armée
A colonel in the Malian army, author of a book in which he discusses abuses by the army against civilian populations, has been dismissed as a "disciplinary measure", according to a decree published Friday in the Official Journal.
Colonel Alpha Yaya Sangaré has been imprisoned since March 2024 for publishing "Mali: The Challenge of Terrorism in Africa" at the end of 2023, some passages of which provoked the anger of the military in power since two coups in 2020 and 2021.
Colonel Sangaré cites, in particular, reports from international human rights organizations documenting army violence during counter-terrorism operations.
"Colonel Alpha Yaya Sangaré of the General Directorate of the National Gendarmerie is dismissed from the ranks of the armed and security forces as a disciplinary measure," according to a decree from the head of the junta, General Assimi Goïta.
Mali has been facing a deep security crisis since 2012, fueled in particular by violence from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda), the Islamic State (IS) organization, as well as community criminal groups.
Since coming to power, the military have broken with the former French colonial power and have turned militarily and politically towards Russia.
They imposed severe restrictions on freedoms by silencing opposition and dissenting voices through coercive measures, legal proceedings, and the dissolution of organizations, citing the need to stand together in the face of a multitude of challenges.
