Mali: Un journaliste arrêté pour un article critiquant la junte du Niger
A Malian journalist was arrested Thursday after publishing an article criticizing the head of the ruling junta in Niger, a press organization said.
Youssouf Sissoko, editor of the Malian newspaper L'Alternance, published an article criticizing the head of the Nigerien junta, Abdourahamane Tiani, for accusing France, Ivory Coast and Benin last week of being involved in an attack on Niamey airport, claimed by the Islamic State group.
The article accused Mr. Tiani of lying and of making Niger, where a military junta took power in 2023 and has moved closer to Russia, a "laboratory for toxic political experimentation".
The Private Press Association indicates that the accusations against Mr. Sissoko include the dissemination of false information, damage to the reputation of the State, and insulting a foreign head of state.
He has been detained and his trial is scheduled for March 9. The association expressed its "deep concern" and called for the journalist's release before his trial.
Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso are led by military juntas that came to power through coups d'état between 2020 and 2023, and have formed an Alliance of Sahel States.
