Maroc: 14 morts dans des crues soudaines dans une ville côtière (nouveau bilan)
Fourteen people died on Sunday in Safi, a port city on Morocco's Atlantic coast, due to flash floods, according to the latest figures from local authorities.
The province of Safi, about 300 kilometers south of Rabat, was hit by "very heavy thunderstorms" which "caused exceptional torrential flows" within "one hour", authorities said in a statement.
Thirty-two people were also injured and taken to the city hospital. "Most of them" were released "after receiving the necessary care and treatment."
According to the same source, 70 homes and businesses located in the medina (old town) of Safi were flooded, 10 vehicles were swept away by the waters and a section of road was damaged, causing the interruption of traffic on several roads within the city.
Images circulating on social media show a torrent of muddy water rushing through the streets of Safi, sweeping away cars and garbage. Others show a mausoleum half-submerged and Civil Protection boats responding to rescue residents.
Efforts continue to search for possible missing persons and authorities are trying to "secure the affected areas" and "provide the necessary support and assistance to the populations affected by this exceptional situation".
The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) had announced on Saturday snowfall from 1,700 meters altitude, as well as heavy rain, sometimes stormy, in several provinces of the kingdom over the weekend.
On Sunday evening, the DGM announced heavy, locally stormy rain (40-60 mm) for Tuesday across the country.
