Nicéphore Soglo, ancien président du Bénin : « Je suis dans ma 95e année, tous les matins je fais de la musculation »
Elected in 1991, in the wake of the National Conference of the Nation's Vital Forces, Nicéphore Soglo spent only five years in power in Benin. The former World Bank employee is, in fact, the only Beninese president who has failed to be re-elected since the country entered the era of democratic renewal.
Today, the native of Badou in Togo is old, very old. In five years, he will be a centenarian. The national television station, Benin TV, recently visited him at his home in Haie Vive, an upscale neighborhood of Cotonou.
"Every morning, I take 2kg weights."
In the interview given to journalists from this public media outlet, Nicéphore Soglo describes how he spends his days.
"I am in my 95th year . Every morning, I take 2kg weights and do weight training. My belly, pff (he taps his belly),... because I do abdominal exercises. I used to do 1000, but with time, naturally, I no longer do 500 but that's still quite a lot," said the patriarch.
Besides sports, Nicéphore Soglo says he enjoys reading. "I read Aimé Césaire…I have books under my bed. There is a book by Cheikh Anta Diop, the Senegalese scholar. What people lack is culture," the former president declared.
