Niger : Le président béninois Wadagni est arrivé à Niamey
The new president of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, began a friendly working visit to Niamey on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. Arriving early in the morning, he was greeted upon arrival by his Nigerien counterpart, Abdourahmane Tiani. He received official honors and attended the playing of the national anthems alongside General Abdourahmane Tiani.
Other civilian and military figures, as well as diplomats accredited to Niger and Beninese nationals residing in the country, were also on the tarmac of Amani Diori Airport to welcome him.
A regime change that changes everything?
Romuald Wadagni's visit to Niger marks the beginning of a new era in relations between the two countries. Porto-Novo and Niamey had maintained strained relations since General Tiani came to power in 2023. The Talon government had unflinchingly implemented the ECOWAS embargo against Niger by closing the borders shared by the two countries.
He had also supported the community organization's plan for military intervention against this Sahelian country to reinstate ousted President Bazoum to his presidential seat.
With the change of regime in Cotonou last May, the leaders of the two countries are more inclined to resume dialogue.
Discussing "regional security issues"
According to the Beninese presidency's account X, Romuald Wadagni will take advantage of his meeting with Mr. Tiani to discuss "regional security issues, prospects for economic and trade cooperation , and the strengthening of ties of solidarity, friendship and fraternity between the people of Benin and Niger".
