Niger: l'Etat islamique revendique l'attaque de l'aéroport de Niamey
The Islamic State claimed responsibility on Friday for the attack on Niamey airport in Niger, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which specializes in counter-terrorism research.
In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, Niamey airport, which houses military sites and is located about ten kilometers from the presidency, was the target of an attack that left 20 dead on the assailants' side, according to the Nigerien military junta.
On Thursday, the group claimed to have received help from "Russian partners" and accused the French, Beninese and Ivorian presidents, Emmanuel Macron, Patrice Talon and Alassane Ouattara respectively, of being the "sponsors" of the attackers.
Niger has been plagued for about ten years by jihadist violence perpetrated by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, linked to Al Qaeda) and the Islamic State in the Sahel in its western and southeastern regions. It is unusual for these attacks to affect the capital.
According to Site, "Islamic State fighters were behind the operation at the Diori Amani International Airport military base."
Citing Amaq, the Islamic State's propaganda agency, Site adds that the attack caused "significant damage".
According to the junta, during the attack, four Nigerien soldiers were wounded, twenty assailants were killed including "a Frenchman" and eleven others were arrested in fighting that lasted about an hour.
Satellite images seen by AFP on Thursday showed partially burned areas near the airport runway and damaged roofs, suggesting an air attack.
