Nigeria: 15 villageois fuyant des gangs meurent noyés
At least 15 people fleeing attacks by criminal groups drowned when their boat capsized on a river in northwest Nigeria, local leaders and a resident told AFP on Sunday.
The tragedy took place in Zamfara, one of the many states in the northwest and center of the country plagued by gangs. Locally known as "bandits," members of these groups steal cattle, loot, and burn villages, kidnapping residents for ransom.
The boat passengers, mostly women and children, had crammed into a small boat as the gunmen attacked three villages in Gummi district on Friday, the sources said.
"Fifteen passengers drowned when the overloaded boat capsized while crossing the river," said Muhammadu Chigari, the traditional chief of Nasarawar Kirfi village.
The victims included eight women, three children and four men, said Mr. Chigari, who attended the victims' funeral. Three people were rescued.
The passengers fled their homes in the villages of Damaga, Tungar Maigunya and Nasarawar Kirfi after the gangs arrived, said Suleiman Dangaladima, another local leader who gave the same toll.
Aliyu Shehu, director of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the incident, saying emergency services planned to "go to the scene" to gather information and assist survivors.
Boat accidents are common on Nigeria's poorly regulated waterways due to overloading and poor maintenance, especially during the rainy season when rivers and lakes are in flood.
