Nigeria : Neuf musulmans arrêtés pour avoir mangé en public le premier jour du Ramadan
The Hisbah Council of Kano arrested nine Muslims accused of eating in public during the first day of Ramadan, going against strict religious rules in northern Nigeria.
The information was confirmed by the deputy commander of the Hisbah, Mujahid Aminudeen, in a statement published on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. According to him, the people arrested — two women and seven men — were caught eating in broad daylight, in violation of the fasting rules observed by Muslims during the holy month.
"We arrested them and they are with us. We will teach them the importance of fasting, how to pray and read the Quran, and how to become good Muslims," said Aminudeen, without specifying the date of their possible release.
Kano, a Muslim-majority state, applies Sharia law alongside Nigerian civil law. Every year during Ramadan, Hisbah agents intensify checks in markets, restaurants, and public places to ensure compliance with the fasting rules, which prohibit the faithful from eating, drinking, or smoking between sunrise and sunset.
In some areas with large Christian communities, restaurants remain open during the day. However, religious authorities remind Muslims that they are required to strictly observe the obligations of Ramadan.
