Nigeria : La réaction du président Tinubu, après la défaite des Super Eagles face à la RDC, en barrages du Mondial-2026
This is a major blow for Nigeria. The Super Eagles were beaten yesterday, Sunday, November 16, by the Leopards of the DRC, in the final of the African playoffs qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
After being held to a draw (1-1) by the Congolese at the end of regulation time and extra time, Eric Chelle's team collapsed in the fateful penalty shootout, losing 4-3 on penalties.
"Despite this regrettable defeat, we must congratulate the players."
This defeat is frustrating for Nigeria, who will miss two consecutive World Cups for the first time in their history. They also failed to qualify for the previous edition in Qatar.
In a statement released on Monday, November 17, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu congratulated the players for "their efforts," but also invited stakeholders in Nigerian football to "reconsider their approach."
"Despite this regrettable defeat, we must congratulate the players for their efforts and continue to support them. We now need to address all the shortcomings. Our leaders, our players, and indeed all stakeholders in football must review their approach," said the tenant of Aso Rock.
"Focus on the AFCON!"
The next challenge for the Super Eagles is the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. For the president, it's time for the team to focus all its efforts on this competition. "Our Super Eagles must rediscover their past glory," he concluded.
