Près de six tonnes de cocaïne saisies par la Marine française au large des côtes africaines
A French Navy frigate seized nearly six tons of cocaine from a fishing boat sailing off the African coast, the Atlantic maritime prefecture announced Wednesday.
"In total, 5,919 kg of cocaine, with an estimated street value of 320 million euros, were seized on board the ship," the maritime prefecture said in a statement.
This seizure took place on Friday, August 29, in international waters, "off the coast of West Africa," at the request of the Anti-Narcotics Office (OFAST), and following information transmitted by the British and American police services and by the Maritime Intelligence Analysis Operational Center (MAOC-N) in Lisbon.
Contacted by AFP, the maritime prefecture did not wish to disclose the nationality of the crew or the ship's flag state.
A judicial investigation has been opened by the Brest (west) public prosecutor's office.
The frigate that carried out the seizure was in the area as part of the Corymbe mission, an operational deployment through which France ensures its presence in West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea.
With this seizure, "the French Navy has already intercepted 45 tons of drugs this year, which is already the record for last year, even though it's only September," Admiral Nicolas Vaujour, Chief of Staff of the Navy, stressed Wednesday morning during a meeting with the Association of Defense Journalists (AJD).
"Three years ago, we intercepted 500 kilos, we were happy, today, we intercept several tons on the boats, so the flow has increased quite significantly," he noted.
In March 2024, a French Navy ship seized 10.7 tonnes of cocaine from a Brazilian fishing boat in the Gulf of Guinea.

Donc ils sont toujours en Afrique
Dans des opérations anti-drogue dans les eaux internationales qui impliquent plusieurs pays concernés et qui existent partout dans le monde. L'Europe est une zone de destination de cette cocaïne donc il est logique que la France y participe. Comme les USA et le Canada avec l'Amérique latine.
Sinon la France a plus d'un million de ses citoyens dans ses territoires africains de la Réunion et de Mayotte, deux régions françaises. La France n'est pas "encore en Afrique", la France est en partie un pays africain. Même hors de ses territoires africains, en France métropolitaine, en Guyane ou aux Antilles il y a des millions de français descendants d'Africains et même une importante diaspora.
