Présidentielle en Guinée: premiers résultats partiels, large avance de Doumbouya

Guinea's junta leader, General Mamadi Doumbouya, has a wide lead over his eight rivals in Sunday's presidential election, according to the first provisional partial official results published Monday evening.

Mr. Doumbouya is far ahead in the municipalities of the Conakry constituency such as Kaloum, Matam, Sonfonia and Ratoma. He often obtains scores exceeding 80%, according to these results read on the public television RTG by the Director General of Elections, Djenabou Touré.

The junta leader, the favorite in the election, maintains a similar lead in his favor in several other areas, notably in Coyah, a town near Conakry, and in the provinces, particularly in Boffa and Fria (west), Gaoual (northwest), Koundara and Labé (north) and Nzérékoré (southeast).

The opposition, whose leading figures were excluded from the vote, had called for a boycott of the election, which was organized more than four years after the September 2021 coup that overthrew President Alpha Condé, who had been in power since 2010.

Despite everything, the election recorded a turnout of 85%, according to Ms. Touré. This was considered the main issue in the election given the absence of any significant opposition candidates.

A citizens' movement demanding a return to civilian rule has challenged this high turnout. "An overwhelming majority of Guineans chose to boycott the electoral charade" organized on Sunday by the junta, the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) stated in a press release published on Monday.

Guineans "refused to participate in this sham election," said the FNDC, without however giving a figure.

Nearly 6.8 million voters, including some 125,000 abroad, were called to vote on Sunday to choose between the contenders, including General Doumbouya, 41, who seems assured of winning in the first round against candidates little known to the general public and in a context of shrinking freedoms.

A candidate, Abdoulaye Yéro Baldé, denounced "serious irregularities" due in particular, according to him, to the denial of access to his representatives in vote centralization commissions and to "ballot stuffing" in certain areas, in a statement Monday evening.

Another candidate, Faya Millimono, denounced "electoral banditry" linked, according to him, to influences exerted on voters and "ballot stuffing", in a separate statement Monday evening.

In a statement Monday morning on public television RTG, the head of the gendarmerie, General Balla Samoura, called on the security forces to maintain the same security measures deployed on election day.

"Vigilance and responsiveness"

"I urge all defense and security forces to maintain their presence, with a high level of vigilance and responsiveness, until the final closure of all electoral operations," he said, stressing that "no major incidents were noted" on election day.

On Saturday evening, security forces claimed in a statement to have "neutralized" earlier that day in the suburbs of Conakry members of an armed group with "subversive intentions threatening national security".

In the capital, armored vehicles and other security force vehicles were still visible the day after the vote at some intersections and points in the city, AFP journalists observed.

Life had returned to normal in Conakry, the city's main markets and public services had reopened, and people were going about their business as usual.

At the end of September, Guineans approved a new Constitution in a referendum that the opposition had called for a boycott of, but where participation officially reached 91%.

The new Constitution, which allows members of the junta to run for office, paved the way for Mr. Doumbouya's candidacy. It also extended the presidential term from five to seven years, renewable once.

Guinea is rich in minerals but more than half of its inhabitants (52%) live below the poverty line, according to World Bank figures for 2024. The West African country has, since its independence from France in 1958, always been ruled by authoritarian regimes.
