Following the Supreme Court's publication of the provisional list of twelve candidates for the November 23, 2025, election, the political landscape in Guinea-Bissau is becoming clearer. Of the fourteen candidates submitted, twelve were approved, including that of outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

A former Portuguese colony in West Africa, Guinea-Bissau has experienced four successful coups d'état since its independence – the last in 2012 – seventeen attempted coups and a constant succession of governments.

All observers of the political scene in Amílcar Cabral's country agree that Mr. João Bernardo Vieira is emerging as the clear favorite in this presidential election. This candidate, who inspires the admiration and hope of his fellow citizens, seems to have all the necessary assets to open a new page in national history.

With his historical legitimacy – he is the nephew and namesake of former President Nino Vieira – he embodies the change so long awaited by the people of Bissau-Guinea after years of political and military crises.

"I will be the president of all Bissau-Guineans," declared candidate João Bernardo Vieira, reacting to the proclamation of the final list published by the Supreme Court.

He added: "This country needs all its daughters and sons to build and restore the image of Guinea-Bissau, which can become an island of prosperity in a troubled sub-region."

The candidate claims to have the best program, taking into account current concerns regarding the promotion of women, youth policies and rigorous management of the country's natural resources.

It focuses on the dynamism of youth and the vitality of Bissau-Guinean women.

According to him, "his time has come and no one can stop the sea with their arms," because he relies on a competent team, endowed with a strong sense of patriotism. His supporters, already well organized, have prepared the ground: the people, he says, are only waiting for November 23 to entrust him with the reins of the country and see their aspirations come true.

João Bernardo Vieira promises a democratic state of law, guaranteeing individual freedoms and carrying the seeds of prosperity for all.

In the run-up to the election, he announced that he would meet the people "soon to present the good news to them," announcing "many surprises."

"No segment of the population will be forgotten. Even our diaspora, with all its potential, will be an integral part of this work of recovering Guinea-Bissau sovereignty and national recovery," he assured.

In conclusion, the candidate reassured his compatriots, saying he was fully aware of the hope placed in him. He promised them a fair sharing of wealth and enhanced security for the benefit of all.
