Projet Simandou : Incident mortel sur le site de SimFer
Nzérékoré, Republic of Guinea – Rio Tinto confirmed with deep regret the death of an employee of a subcontracting company following an incident at the SimFer mining site on Saturday, February 14, 2026.
Condolences and support
In a statement, Rio Tinto CEO Simon Trott expressed his condolences:
"Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of our employee who lost his life, as well as to all those affected by this tragedy. We offer our full support and will work with the relevant authorities, our partners, and our subcontractors to conduct a thorough investigation to fully understand what happened and prevent such an incident from happening again."
Simon Trott also announced that he would be travelling to Guinea this week to be with the teams on the ground and reaffirm the company's commitment to the safety of all employees.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of everyone who works with us. We are determined to learn from this incident and do everything we can to provide the safest possible workplace and prevent such tragedies from happening again.”
Suspension of activities and support for teams
All work at the SimFer site is currently suspended. A support system has been put in place to assist colleagues affected by the incident.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the critical importance of safety in mining projects and the commitment of companies to protect the lives of their employees.
