Retour au pays : Le Pr. Adama Barrow avertit formellement Yahya Jammeh
In Gambia, former president Yahya Jammeh announced his return after several years in Equatorial Guinea. The Gambian government responded on Tuesday. In a press release reviewed by Seneweb, it conceded that every Gambian citizen, including former President Jammeh, has the right to return home. However, it emphasized, "this right does not protect anyone from accountability for alleged serious crimes, especially those established by credible evidence and documented through the work of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC)."
The Gambian government reiterates that the TRRC implicated former President Jammeh in serious human rights violations, including killings, torture, enforced disappearances, and sexual violence. “When Mr. Jammeh returns, robust judicial processes will be activated in accordance with Gambian law. This will include investigation, arrest, and prosecution, with due process, fair trial standards, and respect for the rights of all those involved,” it said.
The Gambian government also denies allegations of a memorandum of understanding or a promise of immunity for the former president. "No such agreement exists. The only document was an unsigned joint statement by the African Union, ECOWAS, and the United Nations. This statement was a diplomatic effort to ensure a peaceful transition, not a binding guarantee. It did not confer any immunity from prosecution and did not place former President Jammeh beyond the reach of the law," the Barrow administration said.
The Gambian government has reassured the victims of the Jammeh regime and their families on this matter: "The implementation of the TRRC recommendations, as endorsed in the government's White Paper, reflects a lasting commitment to accountability, justice and non-repetition," it said.
