Sahara occidental: le Maroc décrète une fête nationale après la résolution de l'ONU
King Mohammed VI of Morocco has decreed that October 31 will be a new national holiday, the palace announced Tuesday, a few days after a UN vote supporting Morocco's autonomy plan for the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
The king named this celebration "Aid Al Wahda" (Festival of Unity), in reference to the "national unity and territorial integrity" of the country, the palace added in a statement relayed by the official Moroccan agency MAP.
This celebration will be "unifying for the expression of attachment to the sacred values" of the kingdom and "to its legitimate rights", the statement specifies.
This is the first time Mohammed VI has established a new national holiday since his accession to the throne in 1999.
Western Sahara, a Spanish colony until 1975, is controlled mostly by Morocco but is considered a "non-self-governing" territory by the United Nations.
A conflict has pitted Rabat against the Polisario Front independence movement, supported by Algiers, for half a century.
Until then, the UN Security Council had been urging Morocco, Polisario, Algeria and Mauritania to resume negotiations - which had been interrupted since 2019 - to reach a "workable, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution".
But at the initiative of the Americans, who are in charge of this issue at the Security Council, a resolution adopted last Friday asks the parties to discuss on the basis of the autonomy plan, considering it to be the "most feasible" solution.
The plan, presented by Rabat in 2007, provides for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty for this vast desert territory.
