The United Nations warned on Thursday of "atrocities" committed in the Sudanese region of Kordofan, neighboring Darfur, where paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces have taken the town of El-Facher, "already the scene of catastrophic levels of human suffering."
UN officials warned on Thursday, October 30, of "atrocities" committed in the Sudanese region of Kordofan, which borders Darfur, where the major city of El-Facher has just been taken by paramilitaries.
El-Fasher, the last major city in Darfur that was outside the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), "already the scene of catastrophic levels of human suffering, has plunged into an even darker hell, with credible reports of mass executions" after the entry of the paramilitaries, the head of UN humanitarian operations, Tom Fletcher, told the Security Council.
"We cannot hear the screams, but while we sit here, the horror continues. Women and girls are raped, people are mutilated and killed, with complete impunity," he added.
But "the killing is not limited to Darfur," he warned, expressing particular concern about the situation in neighboring Kordofan. "Fierce fighting in North Kordofan is causing new waves of displacement and threatening the humanitarian response, including around the capital, El-Obeid."
Reports indicate "widespread atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces in Bara, North Kordofan, following the recent capture of the town," denounced Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa. "This includes reprisals against alleged collaborators, often ethnically motivated," she lamented.
"New territories and new targets"
"At least 50 civilians have been killed in recent days in Bara, due to fighting and summary executions. This includes the summary execution of five Red Crescent volunteers," she stated. Kordofan "is likely to be the next theater of military operations for the warring parties," she warned.
"Drone attacks by both sides are hitting new territories and new targets. This includes Blue Nile, Khartoum, Sennar, South Kordofan and West Darfur, suggesting that the territorial scope of the conflict is expanding," the UN official added.
Describing the "chaotic" situation in El-Facher where "no one is safe", she also noted that it was difficult to estimate the number of victims there.
The war in Sudan has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions and caused the worst current humanitarian crisis, according to the UN.
It was triggered in April 2023 by a power struggle between two former allies: General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, army commander and de facto leader of Sudan since the 2021 coup, and General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, head of the FSR.
