Afrique du Sud: la fille de l'ex-président Zuma accusée de recrutement pour la Russie
South African police announced Sunday they are investigating one of former president Jacob Zuma's daughters, accused by her own sister of being involved in recruiting young men to fight in Ukraine alongside the Russian army.
These accusations against Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, elected MP of her father’s party, MK, were made by her sister in a sworn statement calling for an official investigation, the police added in their statement.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla and two others are accused of being involved in the recruitment of 17 South Africans, which the presidency recently reported, explaining that it had received distress calls from these men trapped in the Ukrainian region of Donbass.
"The men were lured to Russia under false pretenses and handed over to a group of Russian mercenaries to fight in the Ukrainian war without their knowledge and without their consent," the police explained.
Mercenaries, some of whom come from several African countries, are participating on both sides in the war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
South African law prohibits citizens of the country from joining foreign armies, except with government authorization.
