"Ils ont installé une tente et hissé leur drapeau national..." : L’armée guinéenne justifie l’arrestation de soldats sierra-léonais
Yesterday, Tuesday, February 24, the Sierra Leonean government accused, in a statement, the Guinean army of crossing the border to arrest Sierra Leonean soldiers and police officers who were making bricks for the construction of a border post and accommodation center in Kalleyereh, a town located in the Sulima chiefdom, Falaba district (northeast of the country). The events took place on Monday, February 23, 2026.
The Sierra Leonean soldiers and police officers who were arrested were transported across the border into Guinean territory, the statement said.
"A few dozen armed Sierra Leonean soldiers entered Guinean territory without authorization."
The Guinean army, which was implicated, responded on Tuesday with a statement. In the document, it explained that it was Sierra Leonean soldiers who had ventured onto Guinean territory.
"The General Staff of the Armed Forces informs national and international public opinion that, on Sunday, February 22, 2026, several dozen armed Sierra Leonean soldiers entered Guinean territory without authorization, in the district of Kudaya, sub-prefecture of Sandénia, prefecture of Faranah. At this location, situated 1.4 km from the border line, they set up a tent and raised their national flag," explained the head of the Guinean armed forces, General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura.
The Guinean armed forces succeeded in arresting "16 of them, while seizing their equipment. The arrested soldiers and the seized items were handed over to the judicial police for the purposes of the investigation," continued the statement from the General Staff of the Guinean Armed Forces.
Contradictory statements
Clearly, we are dealing with two contradictory accounts. Sierra Leone alleges that the events took place in Kalleyereh, in the Sulima chiefdom. Guinea, on the other hand, places the incident in Kudaya, in the Faranah prefecture. Furthermore, neither country acknowledges having crossed the other's border.
