Un ex-militaire gambien condamné à 67 ans de prison aux Etats-Unis pour torture

A former Gambian soldier was sentenced Friday to more than 67 years in prison by the US courts for torturing opponents of former dictator Yahya Jammeh nearly 20 years ago.

Michael Sang Correa, 46, is a former member of the "Junglers," a death squad that reported directly to President Jammeh.

The former military man was convicted in April in Denver, Colorado, for torturing five people suspected of plotting a coup against Yahya Jammeh in 2006.

For two months, Michael Sang Correa and his comrades had tortured these Gambians, whom they had beaten, burned and electrocuted, sometimes directly on their genitals, according to victims who came to testify during the trial.

One man described having molten plastic poured on his thigh, another said he was suffocated with a plastic bag, and other victims were burned with cigarettes or hit in the face with a hammer.

“Today, Michael (Sang) Correa was finally held accountable for the brutal violence he inflicted on others,” Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Galeotti said in a statement.

"The United States will not be a safe haven for individuals who seek to conceal their gross violations of human rights," he added.

Michael Sang Correa arrived in the United States in 2016 as a bodyguard for the Gambian vice president, who was visiting the UN at the time.

The following year, Yahya Jammeh was forced into exile, after ruling the country with an iron fist for 22 years.

Michael Sang Correa was arrested in 2019 after his visa expired. He was charged in 2020 with crimes committed in Gambia.

The "Junglers," his former unit, have been accused of multiple human rights violations by several NGOs.

Among their victims was an AFP correspondent, Deyda Hydara, who was shot dead in his car on the outskirts of Banjul, capital of Gambia, on December 16, 2004.

In 2023, another member of the "Junglers", Bai Lowe, was sentenced to life imprisonment in Germany for crimes against humanity.

Former Gambian Interior Minister Ousman Sonko was sentenced in May 2024 in Switzerland to 20 years in prison for crimes against humanity committed under the Yahya Jammeh regime.
