Zambie : Deux hommes condamnés pour tentative de sorcellerie contre le président Hichilema
In Lusaka, a court sentenced Zambian village chief Leonard Phiri and Mozambican national Jasten Mabulesse Candunde to two years in prison with hard labor. They were found guilty of attempting to use witchcraft to harm President Hakainde Hichilema.
Arrested in December, the two men were in possession of amulets and a live chameleon, believed to be used in a ritual. The prosecution claims they acted at the request of a close associate of opposition MP Emmanuel Banda, known as Jay Jay, who has already been prosecuted in other cases.
This trial rekindles debates on the influence of traditional beliefs and their exploitation in political life in Zambia.
