Dakar will host the 2025 Africa Food Systems Forum, hosted by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), from August 29 to September 5. This major continental event will bring together more than 5,000 participants, including global agribusiness leaders, to "exchange, reflect, and act toward a sustainable and resilient food future for Africa and the world."

The challenge of this meeting is to make Dakar the catalyst for AGRA's agricultural vision, which is based on agricultural innovations and practices (the use of fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation and the selection of high-yielding varieties) that have led to a sharp increase in the productivity of food crops in developing countries, mainly since the 1960s. While it (the Green Revolution) has increased production and fed large populations, it has also led to negative consequences, including soil degradation and a loss of biodiversity.

These misdeeds are prompting researchers and members of farmers' associations to sound the alarm and alert the Senegalese government. During a webinar organized by the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) on Wednesday, August 5, they revealed AGRA's influence over agricultural policy and its threat to food sovereignty.

Launched in 2006 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation at the initiative of former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, the evaluation of the actions of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) in the 13 main target countries (Mali, Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia) led, according to American researcher Timothy A. Wise, to the following conclusions:

"There is little evidence of a significant increase in income or food security for small-scale food producers." On the contrary, in the countries where AGRA operates, there has been a 30% increase in the number of people suffering from hunger. This situation affects 130 million people in AGRA's 13 target countries. According to Mutinta Nketani, coordinator of the Zambian Alliance for Agroecology and Biodiversity, AGRA has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government allowing it to formulate national agricultural policy, and as a result, "more than 60% of agricultural producers are plunged into hunger."

In addition to the negative environmental impacts, including soil acidification from monoculture with synthetic fertilizers based on fossil fuels, the green revolution promoted by AGRA is "a serious threat to a sustainable food system."

In conclusion, the socio-economist of development and executive director of the Institute for Research and Promotion of Alternatives for Development (IRPAD), Mamadou Goïta and his colleague Absa Mbodji of Dytaes, invite the State of Senegal to carry the voice of agroecology which is "the only solution for a sustainable agriculture and food system".
