Hivernage 2025-2026 à Kédougou : des pluies généreuses, des cultures prometteuses, mais la vigilance reste de mise

The latest rainfall data confirms the trend: the 2025-2026 rainy season is off to a flying start in the Kédougou region. With totals above the seasonal norm at most measurement points, producers are approaching the rest of the season with optimism.

Compared to the 1991-2020 normal, rainfall is above normal everywhere except in Mako, Dakatély, Sabodala and Khossanto. Medina Baffé even recorded an impressive surplus of +275 mm on August 13.

Forecasts predict a normal to surplus wintering compared to last year, a favorable situation for planning production operations.

This year, the rains arrived early, in line with seasonal forecasts. As a result, almost all stations reported more water than last year at the same time. Only Dakately recorded a slight deficit of -7.3 mm.

In mid-August, the agricultural landscape of Kédougou is divided into four groups:

  1. 1st wave: rice, fonio, corn, sorghum and peanuts at the generative stage; cotton at the vegetative stage.
  2. 2nd wave: all crops between vegetative and early generative.
  3. 3rd wave: corn, rice, peanuts and cotton in full growth.
  4. 4th wave: corn and rice still at the seedling stage.

While the overall phytosanitary status is satisfactory, fall armyworms (FAW) have invaded certain plots. The Plant Protection Unit, deployed from Missirah (Tambacounda), has treated 61 hectares and distributed 60 liters of products (Sultan 480 EC) to producers. The authorities are relying on vigilance, awareness-raising and training to prevent a resurgence.

For the moment the rains are abundant and the wintering has started quickly with crops well underway.

The signs are looking good for the 2025-2026 season in Kédougou. But a close eye will have to be kept on pests to ensure the season lives up to its promise.

Au Sénégal un hivernage n’est jamais à cheval entre 2 années. Cet hivernage est de 2025 point.
