Kaolack : Colère des producteurs d’arachide à Taïba Niassène face aux prix et taxes
After Keur Ma Diabel and Ndyba Ndiayenne, peanut producers in Taïba Niassène (Nioro department, Kaolack region) demonstrated to denounce the conditions of the current marketing campaign.
The Collective of Peanut Seed Producers and Exporters (COPEGA), through its president Habib Thiam, criticizes the purchase price set by the State at 305 CFA francs/kg for the producer.
According to Mr. Thiam, this price is "a political rather than an economic price", the normal price being estimated at 250 CFA francs/kg.
COPEGA acknowledges that the initial objective was to support producers after a poor harvest the previous year. However, this year, despite good production, the high price is deterring private buyers (exporters), creating a situation where "there is production, but because of the price, there are no buyers."
Exporters are asking the government to lower the price to allow producers to sell their harvests. They are demanding a price based on the law of supply and demand.
Producers and exporters are also protesting the imposition of a 40 CFA franc/kg tax on peanut exports. Mr. Thiam organized this sit-in to express the sector's disagreement with this tax, which they consider absurd.
COPEGA insists that it is not opposed to the principle of the tax (as it benefits the country), provided that it is borne by the international market. Otherwise, exporters will not be able to pay.
Habib Thiam warned that if the private sector does not operate, the government's forecast of collecting 9 billion CFA francs in revenue from this tax will not be achieved.
