Arachide, maïs : 2025, une campagne agricole de tous les records
Senegalese soil is proving more generous than usual. As in this agricultural plot belonging to Ismaila Sarr. This retired gendarmerie colonel cultivates peanuts, corn, sorghum, and millet on this land. Of all these crops, oilseeds are the most popular, with an estimated yield per kilogram per hectare of 1.285 tons. The man, who decided to devote his retirement to farming, is now a key player in Senegal's quest for food sovereignty. This commitment earned him a visit from the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock on Monday, October 27, as part of the monitoring of the 2024-2025 agricultural campaign. Welcoming this effort, Dr. Mabouba Diagne urged his teams to support him, particularly with the creation of a CUMA (Combination of Agricultural Utilities), of which he will be the centerpiece, to pool agricultural equipment; the use of its approval as a certified seed multiplier and the launch of an "Allô Tracteurs" branch in Goudiry. The minister took advantage of this moment to announce the forecast record figures for the next agricultural campaign 2025. For this year, peanut production is expected to exceed 900,000 tonnes, an increase of more than 200,000 tonnes compared to last year.
“Ears”, there is corn!
One encouraging initiative leads to another. The minister's caravan headed for the village of Syll in the commune of Kouthiabar. This 135-hectare area produces peanuts (52 tons), corn (100 tons), sorghum (16.5 tons), and millet (48 tons). This agricultural feat is the work of Serigne Bara Sy, a renowned marabout in the area who, in addition to his role, also boasts the status of major producer. Faced with these very impressive results, the minister did not hide his joy and promised support for the marabout through the various projects and programs implemented by the minister and his departments. Dr. Mabouba Diagne also announced the signing of an agreement with the Quranic master for the training of his disciples in the agricultural field. Here again, the minister took the opportunity to give the expected results in the sector with a harvest of 639,000 tonnes, an increase of 144,000 tonnes compared to 2024.
