Dettes impayées, camions bloqués, producteurs inquiets : la campagne arachidière s'enlise
The peanut marketing campaign, which opened on December 8th, is going through a period of great turbulence. Between the state's significant debts and the logistical delays of Sonacos, professionals in the sector, grouped within the National Federation of Private Operators, Storers and Transporters (Fnops-T), are sounding the alarm in the columns of the newspaper Le Soleil.
"The main obstacle is financial."
According to Modou Fall, president of the FNOPS-T, interviewed by the national daily newspaper, the state owes operators between 150 and 200 billion CFA francs, including approximately 50 billion in unpaid bills from the previous season. Heavily indebted to banks to finance seeds and fertilizers, these operators are now struggling to raise the necessary funds to buy back the harvest from the farmers.
Sonacos' logistical shortcomings
In addition to this lack of funds, there are major operational difficulties within Sonacos:
Loading delays: some trucks wait up to 10 days before being picked up, compared to a promised delay of 3 days.
Payment delays: settlements are made within 20 to 25 days, far from the advertised 48 hours.
Alarming figures: out of an estimated 20 billion in received production, only 7 billion were actually paid to the operators.
Survival solutions
Faced with the risk of total blockage, the Fnops-T demands the immediate suspension of the export tax and calls for urgent dialogue with the State and Sonacos, in order to avoid a total blockage of the campaign and allow producers to sell their harvest.
