[Billet d'humour] Trump, la diplomatie au rayon casquettes
War is serious. Trying to end it is even more so. But with Donald Trump, everything always ends up feeling like a reality TV show.
After an unlikely stopover in Alaska to chat with Vladimir Putin (no, it's not a Netflix movie), the former president-turned-president welcomed Volodymyr Zelensky and a few European leaders to the White House. We were expecting a formal conference and historic handshakes, but we were also treated to a guided tour.
Trump, in his favorite role as showman, led his guests to where he clearly feels most at home: his presidential souvenir shop. Like a child proud of his marbles, he showed Macron, Zelensky, and the others his collection of helmets emblazoned with improbable slogans: "Make America Great Again" (classic), "Donald Trump was right about everything," "Gulf of America." And of course, the one he proudly brandished: "4 more years," a nod to his dream of a third term.
In the photos, Zelensky, a former comedian, actor, and screenwriter, smiles politely—a survival instinct, no doubt. When you're a president whose country depends on American aid, it's best to laugh at the host's jokes, even if they resemble a sketch in poor taste. Macron, for his part, is holding a gift that seems cumbersome. A cap? A Trump Tower snow globe? A mystery.
The funniest thing is this classroom-like image: Trump, as a schoolteacher, sitting comfortably in front of his "students," as if to say: "Who wants peace, or rather a cap, raise your hand."
And yet, behind the staging, Trump concludes his "summit" with a message of hope: the promise of an upcoming meeting between Putin and Zelensky.
So, after having, according to him, resolved the Israeli-Palestinian conflict "by force", the American president now imagines himself as the official salesman for world peace.
Its slogan could be used in a promotional piece: two conflicts resolved, the third cap free.
