Le Sénégal perd un de ses titres historiques…
Senegal has silently lost one of its most recognizable markers in daily life. Social reality has drifted away from the image the country once projected, not with any visible break, but steadily. This gap has worsened and is now evident in even the most ordinary gestures.
Good things never seem to stay long here. First the second star, then this… But let's not be pessimistic.
We were long told that Teranga (hospitality) was our wealth. Today, it requires a subscription that many can no longer afford. In Senegal, instead of saying "come on, let's organize something," we say "we'll see what we can afford." And often, we see nothing at all. The country continues to function, but with a calculator in its head and a quick glance at its wallet before a smile.
The ritual at ceremonies is well-known. You go, you sit, you eat, but you avoid the dangerous moment when someone takes out the book of contributions. Then, everyone suddenly becomes discreet, almost invisible. Teranga still exists, but it has learned caution.
Daily life has made its decision. When the cost of transportation becomes a serious topic of discussion and the daily special resembles an investment, it's no wonder that solidarity takes a back seat. This isn't a philosophical choice; it's a logistical adaptation.
The most interesting thing is that everyone keeps talking about it as if nothing has changed. Teranga is celebrated in speeches, while in reality, it's all about teleworking.
Even grand projections offer no reassurance. 2050 is being discussed as if it were an automatic repair date, as if the country were undergoing a system update. Except that households don't restart at a scheduled time. Those most affected are workers in the informal and primary sectors.
The truth is simple and a little awkward. Teranga hasn't disappeared. It's just learned to say "I can't" with a smile.
