The recent sporting event between Moroccan and Senegalese teams, which ended in a victory for Senegal, has stirred strong emotions among supporters of both countries.
The passion for football is legitimate, but it must never turn into animosity, much less division between peoples whom history, faith and brotherhood have so firmly united.
As a religious guide, heir to a spiritual tradition founded on peace, restraint and respect for others, I make a sincere appeal for calm.
Sport is a school of discipline and humility; it elevates when it unites, but it degrades when it divides.
Senegal and Morocco are not simply circumstantial partners.
Our two nations share ancient, deep, and enduring ties, nurtured by history, cooperation, spirituality, and mutual respect between our peoples. These fraternal relations cannot be shaken by a sporting result, however important it may be.
I would like to offer a personal and symbolic reminder here.
My father, Serigne Cheikh Gaindé Fatma, maintained relations marked by respect and consideration with both His Majesty the late King Mohammed V and His Majesty the late King Hassan II, grandfather and father of the current King Mohammed VI.
These ties, forged in mutual respect, were based on common values: dignity, faith, wisdom and peace between peoples.
The two photographs that I am attaching to this appeal, showing my father and the two Moroccan royal authorities, are eloquent testimonies: they remind us that the friendship between Senegal and Morocco predates the current generations and must outlive them.
To the Senegalese youth as to the Moroccan youth, I say this: true victory is not only that which can be read on a scoreboard, but that which is measured in the ability to control oneself, to respect others and to preserve the honor of one's country through exemplary behavior.
May the supporters of both nations speak to each other with respect, congratulate each other in victory, console each other in defeat, and remember that what unites us is infinitely stronger than what could divide us.
Let us pray that sport remains a bridge between peoples and not a wall.
Let us pray that peace of heart may always prevail over the excess of passions.
May God bless Senegal.
May God bless Morocco.
May God forever strengthen the bonds of brotherhood between our two peoples.
