Being a Mouride today (By Yacine BA SALL)

Etre Mouride aujourd’hui (Par Yacine BA SALL)

Everything has been said about Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké, Khadimou Rassoul, an exceptional saint. But we never tire of repeating it.

All agree on the immensity of his work, on the singularity of his life, on his unconditional love for the prophet Mohamed (Peace and salvation be upon him) on his self-denial in wanting to make his disciples Mourid Allah, aspirants to Allah.

Its philosophy is based on the quest for Allah, adherence to the essential values in Islam which are mercy, love, and tranquility.

The man of Peace and Faith that he is enlivens hearts through his thoughts and his writings.

As a true ascetic who nourished himself with prayer and reflection, he left us a legacy of nearly 7 tons of writings, odes and panegyrics and a veritable viaticum. Which Saint can claim to have benefited from such divine grace?

Who else prayed on the water but him?

How many saints like Al Ghazali did he versify the writings of?

Besides his solid religious knowledge, his intellectual training is beyond any approximation.

Eager for knowledge, open-minded, he approached most of the scholars and saints of Senegal and Mauritania, weaving close relations with all pious families. Always aiming for the face of Allah in his relations with others.

The purpose of his quest being beyond the reach of the Sheikhs he met, he turned to Allah with an empty, virgin heart and plunged into the Holy Quran with determination.

The goal he set for himself: to devote himself to prophetic approval.

Today, Serigne Touba is unanimously acclaimed. He shines throughout the world. The Guerlain house in Paris made no mistake, paying tribute to Serigne Touba this year on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the Jicky perfume, which the Sheikh chose to make his own.

His writings have not aged a bit. His thinking is resolutely modern. It spans the ages and has never resonated as much as it does today, when Senegal is going through an economic crisis coupled with a profound loss of values.

Serigne Touba also represents courage, resilience in the face of terrible trials, refusal and determination. He faced colonial authority without inciting war or violence, with Peace in his sling.

Of course, Serigne Touba is also the love of work, the cult of effort: “Work as if you were never going to die, pray to God as if you were going to die tomorrow”……

Nearly 100 years after his death, Khadimou Rassoul has succeeded in attracting an audience that continues to expand in terms of age, country of origin and socio-professional category.

So much so that it is difficult to draw up a robot portrait of the Mouride today.

The Mourides are numerous and heterogeneous: Mbacké Mbacké descended from Serigne Touba, Domou Sokhna from mother MbackéMbacké but also and above all, citizens having no family ties with the Sheikh, who spontaneously adopted the Mouride philosophy. How many Khadim Dupont?

But today, should we not undertake a real introspection: are we faithful to the attitude and the thought of the Sheikh? To the poet, the theologian, the humanist that he was?

Among the Mourides, it is difficult to distinguish the good seed from the chaff. The Mouride Sadikh from the Mouride dilettante by opportunism: this opens doors, it is fashionable to be Mouride today in Senegal.

Moreover, the quintessence of the Sheikh's thought is work.

Yet there are people in Senegal who complain about working too much.

Whether we are Mourides or not, we would all benefit from adhering to this recommendation from Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba.

Under the pretext of "kheur" (commitment) many Mourides fall into excess, even intolerance.

It's reasonable to say that Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba's aura eclipses that of other saints. This is obvious. But is there any need to shout it from the rooftops? This may be the beginning of intolerance.

Being a Mouride today, isn't that about discovering other brotherhoods, getting closer to them, learning from them?

To be a Mouride today is not to go in search of knowledge, to open up?

At the Magal of Touba, which has become over the years one of the most important events of the Islamic Ummah, Mouride Sadikh and Berndel hunters rub shoulders. The former makes his pilgrimage in fervor, gives alms, .The latter has come to celebrate: Roman-style feasts, pharaonic spending, etc.

Senegalese and non-Senegalese flock from all over to attend the event: they are Mourides, they belong to another brotherhood, they are without a brotherhood or sometimes even Christians.

The city of Touba is not equipped in terms of infrastructure to accommodate this large crowd. This mixing of people from all walks of life carries health and security risks.

Meanwhile in Dakar there is paralysis, no one is working anymore, the gor goorlu have blown all their salaries and all their savings.

Wouldn't it be appropriate to think about a way to limit these mass departures to Touba? Why not "decentralized" Magal? The public authorities will have to work on infrastructure, sanitation, and health, but at some point it will be up to the Mourides to organize themselves to live their Magal without causing any disruption.

In terms of clothing, the Sheikh's simple attire demonstrates his detachment from material things. What if we sported this stripped-down look?

Khadimou Rassoul thrives on spirituality. Like him, the Mouride would benefit from making these values his own by adopting a minimalist lifestyle.

Massalik al Jinaan, undoubtedly an architectural masterpiece. Designed by Serigne Saliou, built by the talibés. No one will forget that Serigne Mountakha Bassirou took advantage of the opportunity to reconcile Abdoulaye Wade and Macky Sall, and to help secure the release of Khalifa Sall. A lot of work, concrete results. A church even welcomed Muslims so they could pray there... However, several false notes were noted at the inauguration, which could have been almost perfect with better organization of the community.

Massalik al Jinaan must remain the symbol of interreligious and inter-brotherhood dialogue: a place where those who aspire to Allah meet to commune.

Furthermore, this formidable energy of which only the Mouride is capable, why not also put it at the service of great and beautiful causes: fighting against major pandemics, mobilizing funds for children, disabilities, illiteracy, etc. Being a Mouride today is perhaps also that.

We must reread Serigne Touba in the text to decipher his thoughts, his ambition, his expectations of Muslims first and foremost and of humanity as a whole.

Like Mahatma Gandhi in other skies, he is a savior of humanity.

What is exceptional about him is that he accomplished his work without fanfare.

Many Mourides forget that the Sheikh does not belong to them; it belongs to the entire world. It is the "world heritage" of all humanity. There is no point in trying to "privatize" it.

Come on, fellow Mourides, let's soften up, be more open and show a little more sense of proportion. And above all, more asceticism!

Let us be Mourides in the first sense of the term: aspirants to Allah.

Serigne Touba is proof that one can be Mouride and sober.

Let's open our chests and share Bamba!

    - a quelle heure ?
