Grand oral réussi : les fruits tiendront la promesse des fleurs (Par Baba Sall)
Macky Sall's recent hearing before the permanent members of the United Nations General Assembly and numerous civil society organizations marked a decisive turning point in the race for the position of Secretary-General. Following this demanding exercise, one conclusion is undeniable: the former Senegalese head of state delivered a performance of the highest caliber, meeting the expectations of an institution facing unprecedentedly complex global challenges.
From the outset, his speech stood out for its clarity, rigor, and analytical depth. On the major contemporary crises—international security, climate change, economic instability, and global governance—Macky Sall demonstrated an impressive grasp of the issues. But beyond the diagnosis, it was above all his ability to propose concrete, balanced, and inclusive solutions that captured attention. His discourse was not that of a mere observer, but rather that of a man of action, drawing on his proven experience leading a nation and actively engaged on the international stage.
His vision for the UN is based on method and organization, and is rooted in a dynamic of reform, efficiency, and justice. He has clearly articulated an ambition: that of a more representative, more responsive organization, more focused on the real concerns of the people. This stance, both pragmatic and ambitious, reinforces the idea that he is currently one of the most credible candidates to lead the institution.
His chances of success appear all the stronger given the massive support he enjoys from the Senegalese people, who, through the youth, the most representative political parties, religious and traditional leaders, and civil society, have mobilized as one to pave the way for him and give him every chance of success. The most striking proof of this was the huge gathering at the APR headquarters, which was packed for this major public address.
He also enjoys the support of the African continent. This support is not merely symbolic: it reflects the recognition of his strong leadership and a career marked by deep commitment to development, peace, and international cooperation. Africa, long marginalized in major decision-making bodies, sees in Macky Sall a historic opportunity to make its voice heard at the highest level. Through his interpersonal skills, his vision, and his genuine interest in the continent, he will undoubtedly win over even those who were initially hesitant.
But his influence extends far beyond Africa's borders. Many international partners also praise his commitment to dialogue, his mediation skills, and his dedication to multilateralism. In a global context marked by tensions and identity politics, this unifying profile is a major asset. He embodies a form of calm leadership, based on listening, consultation, and the search for compromise.
His campaign will be used to further advocate for and demonstrate that he is the best candidate among all the candidates.
However, like any high-profile candidacy, Macky Sall's is not immune to criticism. Some voices from civil society, such as Seydi Gassama, have distinguished themselves with virulent attacks. While criticism is legitimate in any democratic debate, it must be based on solid arguments and a constructive approach. Yet, in this case, some of the positions taken give more the impression of a trial by innuendo than an objective analysis.
It is revealing that these criticisms are not unanimously shared within civil society itself. Many organizations, aware of the stakes and opportunities presented by this candidacy, choose not to engage in this campaign of denigration. They favor a more measured approach, acknowledging the candidate's qualities and experience while remaining committed to their principles of vigilance and high standards.
Ultimately, Macky Sall's hearing at the UN dispelled many doubts and confirmed what was already evident: his candidacy is serious, credible, and promising. In a world searching for direction, he appears as a man capable of uniting, reforming, and injecting new momentum into the organization.
More than just a candidate, he embodies a vision: that of a renewed UN, fairer and closer to the people. And when choices are made, this vision could well make the difference.
