LA VRAIE ARITHMÉTIQUE DE LA VICTOIRE DU PRÉSIDENT BASSIROU DIOMAYE FAYE, Sonko nie l’évidence (Par Lababa FAYE)
THE TRUE ARITHMETIC OF PRESIDENT BASSIROU DIOMAYE FAYE'S VICTORY
*Sonko denies the obvious*
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko claims that "90% of the political forces that have come to power belong to Pastef." This statement is not only audacious, but also completely false.
Let's stick to his logic, though.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye was elected with 54.28% of the vote. The calculation is simple: 90% of 54.28% = 48.8%.
We would then be in the midst of Amadou Ba's regime, Mr. Prime Minister!
But beyond the figures, there is a deeper reality: the contribution of the Diomaye President Coalition is in fact immeasurable, even inestimable. It is measured in terms of increased credibility, logistical support (the allies contributed a total of nearly 400 million for the campaign), political courage, and resilience.
Another crucial factor: Diomaye's presence on the ballot was no accident. Habib Sy and Cheikh Tidiane Dièye were sponsored thanks to Pastef party members of parliament. Meanwhile, candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye had to navigate the perilous second round of citizen sponsorship. It's also worth remembering that Pastef was operating illegally.
Pastef was dissolved, its leaders were either in prison or forced into hiding; some even fled to a neighboring country. Others, so vocal today on their Facebook pages, were nowhere to be seen.
Who held the campaign's ground during these critical weeks?
Who organized the resistance and kept the program of rupture alive in the minds of the Senegalese?
They are the allies.
Who provided the legal banners and secured the applications? The Diomaye President Coalition.
No one denies Pastef's merit in its heroic fight against Macky Sall's regime. But when the latter nearly succeeded in breaking the momentum of the struggle, it took the courage and determination of the men and women of the Diomaye Président coalition to deliver the final blow.
Those who deny Senegal's recent political history must be reminded that the coalition fought against the postponement of the elections at a time when many were tempted by compromise. This added credibility, particularly at the international level, reassuring partners and observers of the democratic strength of the alternative.
It was also members of the coalition who initiated the joining of forces that led to the creation of the F24. Habib Sy, Khalifa Sall and Mouhamadou Mbodj are witnesses that history could call upon.
To say today that Pastef seized power alone is to truncate the very recent political history of Senegal.
To deny this reality is to refuse to recognize that the real break was built in coalition, not alone.
Today, attempting to rewrite this shared history smacks of dangerous political amnesia. For denying the role of others in a collective victory paves the way for the divisions of tomorrow.
The real betrayal would be to deny that the coalition made victory possible by refusing the postponement maneuver and by bringing fresh blood and additional votes that allowed the election of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the first round.
Whether we like it or not, the numbers are stubborn, but history is even more so. The victory of March 24th is neither a partisan trophy nor a patent of exclusivity. It is the fruit of a united front, a national resurgence, an alliance forged in adversity.
To reduce this conquest to a single political faction is to insult the collective intelligence of the Senegalese people and to undermine the very balance that allowed them to come to power.
The break was not written alone. It was built in coalition.
And those who want to seize victory today risk undermining what they claim to defend.
History will remember one simple thing: without the coalition, there would have been no victory in the first round.
