Le Président Macky Sall à l’ONU : un enjeu national, une ambition mondiale [PAR Ibrahima Baba Sall]
The possibility of Macky Sall running for Secretary-General of the United Nations is generating increasing interest in diplomatic circles. While no official statement has yet been made, support is already emerging in Africa, Europe, and around the world. This reflects a growing international recognition he has acquired over the years. For Senegal and for Africa, such a prospect would represent a historic opportunity.
Former President of the Republic of Senegal (2012–2024), President Macky Sall has the profile of an internationally renowned statesman. His experience leading the country, as well as his chairmanship of the African Union in 2022, allowed him to represent the continent on major issues: climate change, reform of global financial governance, regional security, and food sovereignty. He distinguished himself through his consistent advocacy for a more equitable partnership between the Global North and the Global South.
In a world marked by crises—persistent conflicts, climate change, and widening inequalities—the profile of a leader from the Global South, familiar with the challenges of development, appears particularly relevant. Macky Sall has gained credibility on climate issues, advocating for appropriate financing for Africa. He has also implemented transformative infrastructure and energy policies in Senegal, demonstrating a pragmatic and results-oriented approach.
Macky Sall deserves praise and encouragement for the support he already enjoys, even though no official candidacy has been announced. The fact that his name is being seriously discussed in certain diplomatic circles reflects genuine esteem and a recognized stature. In international competitions, this perception constitutes a major strategic advantage.
However, the reticence shown by the Senegalese government is regrettable. A candidacy for the UN presidency goes beyond the person of President Macky Sall; it involves the prestige, influence, and global standing of the country.
This is why President Macky Sall would have greatly appreciated the official support of his country, even if it was not a prerequisite for the acceptance of his candidacy. This further demonstrates that he is a statesman of exceptional stature, deeply devoted to his homeland.
If this candidacy were to succeed, it would be a resounding success first for Senegal, which would see one of its former heads of state accede to the highest administrative position in the world, and second for Africa, whose representation at this level remains limited.
Beyond its symbolic significance, this ambition embodies a vision. Global challenges—climate change, poverty, economic and security instability—demand inclusive solutions grounded in real-world experience. Macky Sall has demonstrated his ability to combine development, stability, and diplomacy. His background lends him undeniable legitimacy to embody a leadership of dialogue and balance.
Ultimately, Macky Sall's candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General would be an expression of an Africa aspiring to play its full role in global governance. It is now up to national and continental actors to assess and support this momentum. For beyond the individual, it is the image of Senegal and the voice of the African continent that are at stake.
