Macky Sall ne peut pas être Secrétaire Général de l’ONU et il ne le sera pas! (par Ndiaga Loum)
Imagine for a moment Senegal officially supporting Macky Sall's candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General; the rest of Africa and the world will turn to us (and especially against us) to remind us of the horrible "exploits" of the "Butcher of Marrakech" who voluntarily condemned himself to exile.
1. Macky Sall's CV for UN candidacy
In a supreme irony, it was here, in front of the UN headquarters in New York, that Senegalese people in the diaspora had, just two years ago, placed giant screens projecting the unbearable images of his assassinations, torture, and crimes. These morally unacceptable acts could, if justice is served, tomorrow be classified as "crimes against humanity." Is it the perpetrator of these acts (if we trace the chain of responsibility back to the mastermind) who would then ascend to the pedestal of the UN Secretary-General's office, promote human rights, call for respect for the rule of law, support the symbolic action of the International Criminal Court, denounce the crimes and assassinations of bloodthirsty regimes, and condemn dictatorships? Is it the very person who promised to reduce the opposition to its bare minimum who would now advocate for the importance of dissenting voices within the democratic system? Is this the same man who donned the most disreputable guise of justice to secure a conviction and then politically orchestrate the forced exile of his opponent (Karim Wade)? Is this the same man who orchestrated the arrest, trial, and imprisonment of the former mayor of Dakar, Khalifa Sall (accused of illegally misappropriating funds allocated to the capital, funds from which he, Macky Sall, allegedly benefited during his 2012 election campaign)? Is this the same man who deliberately altered the electoral code to legally justify the loss of civil rights for his political opponents after their convictions? Is this the same man who held up his own record as an example to others?
It wasn't enough for him to deprive them of their right to be elected; he had pushed his "coquetry" (excuse me, his cruelty, it's the same thing in his subconscious) to the point of stripping them of their right to vote. To complete his plan to annihilate the opposition, he had even exploited a sex scandal to legally eliminate the Pastef leader, Ousmane Sonko, who is once again paying a heavy price for a formidable adversary whose popular strength he had underestimated. If he backed down in March 2021 (after 14 victims were coldly gunned down) under pressure from religious leaders, it wasn't out of a sudden burst of lucidity, but out of fear, dread, and cowardice, brooding over his revenge like a surprised upstart, shaken in his acquired certainties as an autocrat.
It is this same Macky Sall, who equivocated on his candidacy for an unconstitutional third term ("I will say neither yes nor no"), who now invites us to forget without offering any contrition in return. It was under his rule that nearly 2,000 people (some of them minors) were arrested and imprisoned for a year or more, then released without trial after the passage of an amnesty law from which he and his "protégés" would be the main beneficiaries. It was under this same Macky Sall that the disappearance of soldiers and gendarmes was planned and orchestrated, leaving their children orphaned, children who may also slowly die of grief. Add to these crimes of bloodshed those of an economic nature (embezzlement of public funds, accusations of alleged money laundering involving his relatives and his own son, and hidden debt), and there you have the CV of Macky Sall, a candidate for the position of UN Secretary-General ! No, one cannot hate one's country so much as to dare, I was going to say think for a single second, to support Macky Sall's candidacy to head the UN organization.
2. Turn the page on the dinosaurs for good
The only service the Senegalese people could still render to Macky Sall (since they cannot try him for high treason on Senegalese soil before the High Court of Justice) is to ignore him and let him peacefully enjoy his gilded exile, built undoubtedly with money embezzled from the Senegalese people. May God grant that he uses this time to purge himself of negative memories, and perhaps tomorrow, he will be able to ask for the forgiveness of the Senegalese people, when, after his crash course in religion, he regains his faith and wisdom to finally express remorse and repentance. In the meantime, Macky Sall fails to meet the basic requirements of public morality to claim he wants to "lead" anything, let alone the entire world!
As for the promoters of such a UN candidacy, it's never too late for them to realize that the world has changed. African history has taken a turn that definitively breaks with the neo-patrimonial past produced by Françafrique, represented today on the continent by that small, residual but still visible minority of nonagenarian and infirm presidents who govern a population whose overwhelming majority is the age of their great-grandchildren. To lend an ear to these disembodied dinosaurs with their detached projects, like this one (sponsoring Macky Sall's candidacy for the UN while the political murders and assassinations committed under his rule remain unsolved), is to go against the grain of history. You don't need a degree in political science to understand that. On the other hand, failing to understand it would simply be a sign of the atavistic stupidity of a simpleton for whom nothing can be done. If history were fixed and confined to a binary, Manichean logic (good guys and bad guys), Macky Sall would undoubtedly be on the wrong side of history. The warnings, which stemmed from simple intellectual vigilance, had been in vain; he (and his entourage) considered all those who did not think like them to be necessarily against them—that is to say, bitter individuals condemned to a state of rigid indignation.
Those promoting his UN candidacy today are the same ones who, yesterday, chained him with the red-hot iron of exclusion, repression, and cold, counterproductive malice. In short, the reign of an authoritarian, sectarian, clannish, and therefore satanic logic that drove him to the ultimate provocation before the stunned eyes of a shocked international community, and which discredited him forever: postponing presidential elections on the eve of the start of the electoral campaign. All of this built on a monstrous pretext based on accusations of corruption against the judges of the Constitutional Council, with, alas, yet another wave of victims added to the previous ones, bringing the total to nearly 80 dead. It is as if during Macky Sall's second term, the blood shed by the people was a moment of enjoyment, a symptom of absolute domination over a country that had become his long-dreamed-of childhood kingdom, the one traced by the false and imaginary legend of these modern-day griots who invented a warrior genealogical lineage for him.
In short, if among the 8 billion people who live on this earth, only Macky Sall remained to lead the UN, then we might as well dissolve the international body and transform its real estate into places of prayer or yoga for all those who would need to relieve their consciences affected and "infected" by their past actions, which are blameworthy to the point of being unforgivable.
