Dr Yoro Dia : « l’Union Africaine va soutenir Macky Sall »
The member states of the African Union met from February 14 to 15 in Addis Ababa for the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly. Among the topics discussed was the question of African support for Macky Sall's candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. No decision was reached at the conclusion of the meeting. Political scientist Dr. Yoro Dia, a guest on the program "Opinion" on Walf TV, commented on this situation and the announced prospects.
He indicated that the heads of state had decided to postpone the examination of the matter to a later date. “The good news will eventually arrive because the heads of state have decided to postpone it to a virtual conference. The summit concluded today (Sunday, February 15th), and the heads of state, particularly the so-called 'C10' (a group of about ten countries under the leadership of Sierra Leone, which is working on UN reform), decided to postpone it to a later date. The heads of state will address the issue in a virtual conference. But I assure the Senegalese people that the good news will arrive and that the African Union will undoubtedly support Macky Sall for the position of UN Secretary-General,” he stated.
The political scientist highlighted the symbolic importance of such an appointment for Senegal and beyond: “To be perfectly frank, Senegal is making a fool of itself on the continent. We just won the Africa Cup of Nations, and if Macky Sall becomes UN Secretary-General, it’s as if Senegal won the World Cup.” He added that this scenario could garner support beyond the African continent. “If Macky Sall becomes UN Secretary-General, he will be the first Muslim to lead the international organization. That’s why he will have the support of the Muslim world and the OIC,” he said.
Dr. Yoro Dia also commented on the Senegalese authorities' stance at the summit. "The great surprise among Africans stemmed from Senegal's very timid position. No one can understand why, for such an important event, the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, did not attend in person and instead sent his Prime Minister, who spent the entire summit simply taking selfies," he observed. He recalled that Senegal had in the past actively supported national candidates for international positions, citing Abdou Diouf for the Francophonie and Amadou Makhtar Mbow for UNESCO.
