GAZA : PLUS DE 100 ARTISTES SÉNÉGALAIS APPELLENT LE PRÉSIDENT DIOMAYE FAYE À SANCTIONNER ISRAËL
More than a hundred Senegalese artists and cultural figures have appealed to the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, urging him to take concrete measures against Israel, which they accuse of genocide in Gaza. Their appeal was made public through a letter published by the collective African Artists Against Apartheid Senegal.
The signatories include leading figures in the cultural world, notably choreographer and dancer Germaine Acogny, writer Ken Bugul, award-winning filmmakers Mati Diop and Alain Gomis, as well as numerous directors, actors, critics, and curators. They all call on the Senegalese authorities to move beyond diplomatic pronouncements and adopt effective sanctions.
In this letter, the artists directly address the head of state: "The Senegalese people expect concrete measures. What role will your government play in saving international law from the ruins of Gaza?"
Senegal is a member of the Hague Group, an international bloc created to coordinate legal and diplomatic actions against Israel. However, unlike countries such as South Africa, Namibia, or Colombia, Dakar has not yet announced any formal sanctions. The signatories are therefore calling on President Faye to "fully participate" in the Group's actions and to mobilize other African states.
The artists are demanding, among other things: the suspension of diplomatic and economic relations with Israel; a ban on the transit of Israeli military equipment through Senegalese ports and territorial waters; opposition to any reintegration of Israel as an observer with the African Union, from which it was suspended in 2023.
The letter denounces what the signatories describe as the "total impunity" enjoyed by Israel, despite accusations made by international bodies. Writer and researcher Tabara Korka Ndiaye, for her part, refers to a "fem-genocide," arguing that Palestinian women are specifically targeted and drawing a parallel with violence against women in Senegal.
With the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games approaching, artists are also calling on authorities to support initiatives aimed at excluding Israel from international sporting competitions. They believe that Senegal's commitment to this issue would be consistent with the history of the African continent, marked by the struggle against slavery, colonialism, and apartheid.
"It is in times of crisis that nations forge their greatness," they conclude, urging Senegal to take a clear stand in favor of international justice and human rights.
