Coach Pape Bouna Thiaw has called up Ousseynou Niang, a striker from Union Saint-Gilloise (Belgian D1), to strengthen the Lions' squad, ahead of the next two rounds of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The call-up comes after Ismaïla Sarr withdrew from the squad after being injured during Crystal Palace's 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday in the third round of the Premier League. The Senegalese winger injured himself while scoring his team's third goal, before being substituted, leaving his club to finish the match with ten men.
Sarr's replacement is no stranger. Trained at the Diambars Institute in Saly, Ousseynou Niang rose through the ranks of the national team, passing through the U17, U20, and U23 levels. Now 23 years old, the Ziguinchor native is gradually establishing himself as one of the young talents to watch in Belgium.
With Union Saint-Gilloise, he distinguished himself last August with his remarkable performances, which made him a finalist for the Jupiler Pro League Player of the Month award according to DH/Les Sports and RTBF Sports. Fast, technical, and impactful, Niang particularly distinguished himself during the derby against Anderlecht, winning a penalty in the opening minutes.
Just one year after his arrival from Latvia, he has already established himself as a versatile player, capable of contributing offensively (three assists) while also serving his team through constant defensive investment.
Elsewhere, the Lions' training began Monday afternoon at the Abdoulaye Wade annex stadium. However, the first session was disrupted by heavy rain and gusts of wind. Only six players were present for this first training session.

Dommage
